Does my motherboard support PCIe Gen 5.0 M.2?
PCIe Gen 5.0 M.2 slots are available on motherboards with Intel Z790 (12th/13th/14th Gen), Intel Z890 (Core Ultra 200S), and AMD X670E/X870E (Ryzen 7000/9000 series) chipsets. Check your motherboard's specifications for an M.2 slot labelled PCIe 5.0. If your motherboard only has PCIe Gen 4.0 or Gen 3.0 M.2 slots, the SN8100 will still work but at the lower speeds of the available slot — backward compatibility is fully supported.
Do I need the heatsink version or can I use the one on my motherboard?
PCIe Gen 5.0 SSDs generate more heat than Gen 4.0 drives during sustained workloads — thermal throttling can reduce performance if the drive runs too hot. If your motherboard includes a high-quality M.2 heatsink that covers the 2280 slot, you can use the drive without the integrated heatsink (it is removable). If your motherboard's heatsink is minimal or absent, the integrated heatsink version is strongly recommended for maintaining sustained peak performance.
How does the SN8100 compare to the Samsung 990 Pro and 9100 Pro?
The Samsung 990 Pro is a PCIe Gen 4.0 drive — significantly slower in sequential throughput than Gen 5.0 drives. Against the Samsung 9100 Pro (Gen 5.0), the SN8100 leads slightly in sequential read speed (14,900 vs 14,800 MB/s) while the 9100 Pro has slightly faster write speeds in some configurations. Is 8TB realistic for a single M.2 SSD?

It uses high-density CBA NAND to achieve this without requiring a double-sided PCB, keeping it compatible with most M.2 slots. Note that 1TB = 1 trillion bytes in manufacturer specifications — actual formatted capacity available to the operating system will be slightly less, typically around 7.27TB as displayed by Windows.
Is this suitable for gaming — will I notice a difference over Gen 4.0?
For traditional game loading screens, the difference over a fast Gen 4.0 drive is marginal — most games are not bottlenecked by storage speed at those access patterns. Where the SN8100 delivers a noticeable advantage is in games using Microsoft DirectStorage, open-world titles that stream assets in real time, and in game installation and update speeds. If you are building a future-ready system or running a workstation that doubles as a gaming machine, the SN8100 is a justifiable upgrade.
